On 15 October 2026, ABC Solar Electronics in Cebu listed PWM charge controllers from ₱600 (KTD 5 A) to ₱1,500 (KTF 30 A), and SRNE MPPT controllers from ₱3,500 (20 A) to ₱9,500 (60 A). LakaSolar listed One Solar MPPT units at ₱4,500 (40 A), ₱7,500 (60 A) and ₱8,500 (80 A). Those are controller-only pesos — no panels, battery or labour.
If you are building a small off-grid kit for a farm house, boat or sitio without a co-op line, the controller sits between the panels and the battery. Pick wrong and you either over-voltage a cheap PWM, or you buy an MPPT you did not need. This post goes deeper than the single SRNE MPPT line in our off-grid solar sizing post. For portable power stations that already include their own charge electronics, see EcoFlow and solar generator prices. Many all-in-one solar street lights also ship with a built-in MPPT or PWM — the same Voc and battery Wh checks still apply. The pillar overview is our solar generators and portable power guide.
Prices checked 15 October 2026 (Philippine time) on each seller's own website. They change often. Confirm the model, amp rating and max PV voltage before you pay. Listing a product isn't an endorsement, and Solar Leyte earns nothing from these links. No MACC product prices appear below.
What PWM and MPPT actually do
Both devices charge a battery from solar panels and protect it from overcharge. They differ in how they use the panel:
- PWM (pulse-width modulation) connects the panel almost directly to the battery for part of each cycle. The panel voltage is pulled down toward battery voltage. That is fine when the panel's Vmp (voltage at maximum power) is only a little above the battery — for example a "12 V" panel (Vmp around 17–18 V) on a 12 V battery. If Vmp is much higher than the battery, a large share of the panel's watts never reach the battery.
- MPPT (maximum power point tracking) runs a DC–DC converter. It lets the panel sit near its Vmp, then converts that power down to battery voltage at a higher current. Maker datasheets claim high tracking and conversion efficiency: EPEver Tracer-AN lists MPPT tracking above 99.5% and charge conversion up to 98% (EPEver Tracer-AN 10–40 A datasheet); Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 and 100/50 list maximum efficiency above 98% and state that an ultra-fast MPPT can improve energy harvest by up to 30% compared with PWM in changing light (Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 & 100/50 datasheet). ABC's SRNE ML series page claims charging efficiency 15% to 20% higher than conventional PWM (seller marketing text on the SRNE ML 20 A listing).
Those "up to 30%" / "15–20%" figures are manufacturer or seller claims under favourable mismatch, not a lab study we ran in Leyte. Real gain depends on how far panel Vmp sits above battery voltage, and on clouds. On a well-matched small 12 V kit, the gap can be small. On a high-Voc modern panel into a 12 V or 24 V battery, MPPT is usually the only sensible choice.

Read the 21 V limit carefully. A modern 550 W "grid" panel often has Voc around 50 V (see our 550–620 W panel price post). That panel must not be wired into a KTF/KTD controller that caps panel voltage at 21 V. Those PWM units are for small "12 V class" panels whose Voc stays under the limit — typical of lantern kits, CCTV top-ups and tiny boat systems, not a farm rooftop array.

Premium brands without a peso we could lock on 15 Oct: Victron SmartSolar / BlueSolar and EPEver Tracer-AN appear on Lazada and Shopee, and PhilSolar is Victron's long-standing PH distributor, but we did not capture a stable walk-in list price in this pass. Use the datasheets for Voc and efficiency; ask a dealer for today's quote. The off-grid Home A build still uses the ABC SRNE ML2430 at ₱4,000 as its example MPPT (off-grid post).
Marketplace PWM "30 A" listings often sit around ₱1,000 on aggregator pages; treat those as unverified until you open the seller page and confirm Voc, battery chemistry support and return address.

Amp sizing (worked example — labelled)
A common planning rule for charge current is:
Approx. charge current (A) ≈ panel watts ÷ battery volts
That assumes the controller can deliver nearly all of the panel power into the battery. For MPPT, makers advertise conversion near 98%, so some designers multiply by about 0.95–0.98. This is a Solar Leyte planning rule of thumb, not a manufacturer formula. Always check the controller's rated charge current and max PV input power for your battery voltage.
Worked example A — one 550 W panel on a 24 V battery (MPPT):
- Panel: 550 W (the LVTOPSUN 550 W class used in the off-grid builds, listed at ₱4,200 at ABC on 8 Oct 2026).
- Battery: 24 V nominal (25.6 V LiFePO4 in those builds).
- Rough current: 550 ÷ 24 ≈ 22.9 A.
- With a 0.95 factor: ≈ 21.8 A.
- A 30 A MPPT (SRNE ML2430, ₱4,000) has headroom; ABC rates it at 800 W max PV on 24 V, so one 550 W panel fits. A 20 A unit (520 W max on 24 V per the ML2420 table) is too tight for a continuous 550 W nameplate.
Worked example B — same 550 W panel on a 12 V battery:
- 550 ÷ 12 ≈ 45.8 A.
- You need roughly a 50–60 A class controller and you must stay under its max PV watts at 12 V (ML2440 lists only 550 W at 12 V; ML4860 lists 800 W at 12 V). Oversizing the panel beyond the controller's watt limit just wastes money — the controller clips.
Leave margin for cold-weather Voc (panels' open-circuit voltage rises when cold) and for a second panel later. In Naval's climate the cold spike is mild compared with temperate countries, but the datasheet Voc at the controller's rated temperature still has to clear your string Voc with room to spare.

Voc limits: why cheap PWM and big panels don't mix
Open-circuit voltage (Voc) is what the panel pushes when nothing is drawing current — the number that can fry a controller if it is too high.
Controller class | Typical max PV Voc in this post | What that allows |
|---|---|---|
ABC KTF/KTD PWM | 21 V (seller table) | Small 12 V-class panels only |
SRNE ML 20–40 A MPPT | 100 V at 25 °C (ABC table) | One high-Voc 550 W panel, or a short series string — check datasheet |
SRNE ML4860 / One Solar 40–80 A | 150 V PV input | Longer strings; still check cold Voc |
Victron SmartSolar 100/30 & 100/50 | 100 V (Victron datasheet) | Same Voc class as the SRNE 100 V units |
EPEver Tracer-AN 10–40 A (100 V models) | 100 V at min temp / 92 V at 25 °C (EPEver datasheet) | Same planning idea |
Never series-string panels into a PWM that expects a single matched panel. Series multiplies Voc. Parallel multiplies current — then the controller amp rating becomes the limit.
Approximate PWM loss math (worked example — labelled)
When a PWM controller holds the panel near battery voltage, a simple way to illustrate the lost power is:
Approx. PWM harvest (W) ≈ panel watts × (battery volts ÷ panel Vmp)
This is an approximate worked example, not a field measurement and not a published study. Real harvest also depends on the I–V curve, temperature and how the PWM stages.
Worked example C — matched small kit (PWM is fine):
- Panel: 100 W, assume Vmp ≈ 18 V (typical "12 V" panel class).
- Battery: 12 V.
- Approx. PWM harvest: 100 × (12 ÷ 18) ≈ 67 W.
- Gap vs nameplate: about 33 W left on the table in this crude model — annoying, but the whole controller only cost ₱600–₱1,100. For lights and phone charging, many people accept it.
Worked example D — mismatched rooftop panel (PWM is the wrong tool):
- Panel: 550 W with Vmp ≈ 41 V (illustrative mid-range for a 144-cell / half-cut style module; use your datasheet).
- Battery: 24 V.
- Approx. PWM harvest: 550 × (24 ÷ 41) ≈ 322 W.
- Gap: about 228 W (roughly 41% of nameplate) in this illustration.
- Worse: the ABC KTF table's 21 V max panel voltage means you often cannot connect that panel at all without damaging the controller — the Voc (~50 V class) already exceeds 21 V.
So the "cheap" ₱1,500 PWM is not a bargain against a ₱4,000 MPPT if it forces you onto tiny panels or throws away hundreds of watts every sunny hour. Victron's datasheet "up to 30%" and SRNE's "15–20%" marketing sit in the same story: mismatch is what MPPT is for.

When PWM is fine
- Panel Voc is safely under the controller's max, and Vmp is close to battery voltage (classic 12 V panel on 12 V battery, or 24 V panel on 24 V battery).
- Array is small — under ~200–300 W — where the peso gap to MPPT buys little extra energy.
- Budget kit for lights, USB charging, a fan, or a solar street light-style load where the fixture already ships as a matched set.
- You accept lower harvest on cloudy days and will not expand the array soon.
When MPPT pays for itself
- Higher-voltage panels or short series strings into 12 V or 24 V batteries (almost every modern 550 W+ module).
- Bigger arrays where 15–30% more harvest (maker claim range) over years outweighs a ₱2,000–₱5,000 controller premium.
- Cloudy or partly shaded days — Victron specifically calls out changing light as where fast MPPT helps vs PWM.
- You already sized an off-grid house like Home A/B/C in the off-grid post — those builds use MPPT or an inverter-charger with a built-in MPPT for a reason.
- You might add panels later — buying a controller with Voc and amp headroom once is cheaper than replacing a burned PWM.
Rough payback sketch (Solar Leyte illustration only): if MPPT recovers an extra ~100 W average for 4 peak-sun-style hours on a good day, that is ~0.4 kWh. Over a year of mixed weather the extra energy is worth something only if you would otherwise run a generator or miss loads — it is not a BILECO bill credit for a pure off-grid house. Compare the ₱2,500–₱3,000 jump from a 30 A PWM to a 30 A MPPT against the cost of one extra panel (~₱4,200 for the cheap 550 W listing) and against generator fuel. Often the MPPT wins before the second rainy season.
How this fits portable power and hybrids
- Separate charge controller + battery + inverter: this post.
- All-in-one power station (EcoFlow and similar): the MPPT is inside; you buy panel input limits from that brand's sheet (price comparison).
- Hybrid / off-grid inverter-chargers (Axpert, SRNE HFP, Deye hybrid): they include a high-voltage MPPT — you are not shopping a 30 A box separately (hybrid inverter prices, off-grid builds).

FAQ
How much is an MPPT charge controller in the Philippines? On 15 October 2026, ABC listed SRNE MPPT units from ₱3,500 (20 A) to ₱9,500 (60 A). LakaSolar listed One Solar MPPT units at ₱4,500 (40 A), ₱7,500 (60 A) and ₱8,500 (80 A).
How much is a PWM charge controller? ABC listed PWM units from ₱600 (5 A) to ₱1,500 (30 A) the same day. Check the max panel voltage — several ABC PWM models are capped at 21 V.
Is MPPT always better than PWM? No. On a small, voltage-matched 12 V kit, PWM is often enough. MPPT matters when panel Vmp is well above battery voltage, when you use modern high-Voc panels, or when you want more harvest in mixed weather.
How do I size the amps? Divide panel watts by battery volts for a rough charge current, then pick the next controller size up and confirm the seller's max PV watts at your battery voltage. Worked examples above are labelled planning maths.
Can I use a 550 W panel with a PWM controller? Only if the controller's Voc limit and wiring allow it — many cheap PWM units at 21 V max cannot. Prefer MPPT for 550 W-class modules on 12/24 V batteries.
Do I still need this if I buy a hybrid inverter? Usually no — hybrids and many off-grid inverter-chargers already include MPPT solar inputs. This post is for separate controller builds and for understanding what is inside sealed kits.
